Happy May! I feel like a broken record, but this year is flying by. One thing I enjoy about May, other than spring-duh, is celebrating how much I love my mom with Mother’s Day.
Mother’s Day is a special time to acknowledge how wonderful my own mother is and remind her how much I appreciate her.So, how do I do that? Sometimes I purchase a thoughtful gift, buy her something she needs, get her flowers, or purchase a gift card to one of her favorite places. However, over the past few years more often than gift giving I gift an ‘experience.’
Have you ever heard of the 5 Love Languages? Quality time is at the top of my list, and my mom’s love language is also quality time.
So, what better way to show my love and appreciation than to spend a little quality time with my mom to celebrate Mother’s Day.
Most years I just wrap a bow around myself and show up on her doorstep. I’m the gift that keeps on giving.
Here are 5 ideas of how you can spend quality time with your mom to celebrate Mother’s Day:
Shopping day. Shopping is a special bond for my mom and I. We’ve always enjoyed shopping for clothing, home goods, etc. with one another. Sometimes we hit up the same stores, and other times we try new local stores. If I invite my mom out to shop for Mother’s Day, I usually buy lunch for us.
Dinner & movie. We love dinner and movie (or lunch and movie) dates. My mom and I saw Beauty & the Beast together a few weeks ago and it was so fun. Renting a movie and dining in is also a good time.
Spa treatments. In lieu of a spa gift card, take your mom out for a manicure and pedicure. Short on funds? Plan a spa day in. Bring out your favorite polishes and face masks and have a spa day together at home. Don’t forget the relaxing music, and probably some snacks too.
Take a class. Many cities have painting classes, cooking classes, and even classes on flower arranging! My mom and I signed up for a wine & canvas class where we painted and sipped wine. If you’re feeling active, you could even attend a yoga class, then brunch together afterwards.
Go somewhere you haven’t been together. Is there a new art exhibit at the local museum you haven’t seen yet? A walk around your favorite park followed by coffee at the local cafe can be a nice way to spend quality time together.
The great thing about giving the gift of time is that you can leave distractions at the door and focus on showing some extra appreciation. These ideas are totally flexible too, so if you want to build an entire day together or really pamper your mom at the spa- you totally can! If you’re short on cash and your mom understands, a nice stroll around your favorite park and buying coffee and a pastry afterwards is a great way to give your time without spending a lot of cash.
What are your Mother’s Day traditions? Are you a mom, or do you spend the day celebrating your own mama? Do you know your love language? What’s the best gift you’ve ever given your mom for Mother’s Day?
