Skincare: Taking Good Care of My Face

Happy Saturday! One thing I love about the weekend is that mornings are usually much more relaxed. Weekends bring opportunities to try new outfit combinations, take a little longer with my hair and makeup, and pamper myself with a little more time for trying new beauty and personal care products.

Saturdays and Sundays are my trial runs with new products. I don’t always have time during the week to incorporate something new into my routine, but if I try it on the weekend and love it, it’s a lot easier adding it into my daily routine.

We didn’t get a lot of snow this winter, but we had consistently cold temperatures. All that cold took a toll on my skin.

My skin has always been more dry than oily. For years, I worked in a dry hospital. During a 12 hour shift skin would get so dry, and it seemed like no amount of lotion would soothe my cracking hands or the flaking skin on my face. More than once during the winter I would have to bust out Vaseline to put on my face during my shift to keep moisture in!

I’ve been loving face masks for my skin this spring to help bring a little moisture and life back into my face. And, since I’m getting closer and closer to 30, I’ve been taking care to not only find products that will moisturize, but I’m also starting to buy more anti-aging and anti-wrinkle products.

I’ve still been loving my L’Oreal clay masks, but I’ve also been trying a few new products and I thought I’d share some of my skincare routine.

Like I mentioned, my main issues are dealing with dry skin, and also protecting my skin from the effects of aging. I look for products to exfoliate and get rid of dead skin cells as well as products that hydrate my skin and that have age defying qualities.

I recently started to use this ProX microdermabrasion and cleaning system by Olay. Other than dryness, I haven’t ever really had many skin issues, and have only been paying more attention to my skincare products in the last 5 or so years. This was the first time I had ever tried any skincare technology before.

Olay Microdermabrasion ProX - Skincare  Olay Microdermabrasion ProX - Skincare To be honest, I was a little hesitant to give it a try.

The kit comes with one foam head and one cleansing brush. Each attachment is used with its own cleansing product.

The foam sponge is the microderm component and is used with a thermal crystal polisher that exfoliates and sort of ‘buffs’ skin to even skin tone. This can be used up to 2 times each week.

The other attachment is a soft-fiber cleansing brush which is gentle enough to be used for daily cleansing. It comes with an anti-aging exfoliating cleanser to exfoliate while cleaning.

The system is easy to use, has three speeds, and Olay even provides a suggested schedule of use to make the most of the different attachments and cleansers. I was a little worried it wouldn’t be gentle enough on my skin, but I read through the directions and was pleasantly surprised at how gentle the brush and foam heads were. They give a great tip to apply minimal pressure and move the attachments around in gentle circles.

My skin always feels so smooth after using it.

In addition to the microderm kit, I’ve been trying some new mask products as well.

I’ve used some Yes To products before, but I’ve newly discovered the Yes To Coconut hydrating masks. I tried a paper mask, which is a single use mask which is unfolded and applied and left for 10 minutes (sort of made me look like a burn victim while I was wearing it with the wet paper against my own skin, but I just hid away from my husband) as well as the ultra hydrating mask which is applied like a clay or mud mask. Both products use natural ingredients and are paraben-free, which I love. Speaking of love, the Yes To coconut collection scent is tropical and heavenly. I apply the hydrating mask 5-10 minutes before hopping in the shower, and my skin feels like butter afterwards.

Another recent favorite is a mud mask from SheaMoisture. There are other masks in their line, but my favorite is this Raw Shea Butter Hydrating Mask with frankincense and myrrh extracts. I think of the three wise men every time I use it. The shea butter deeply moisturizes and renews skin while the extracts nourish, calm and have anti-inflammatory properties.

One thing I super love about the SheaMoisture line is that they are free of yucky ingredients and made with natural and organic ingredients.

In more recent years as the wrinkles have started to show up and the laugh lines have deepened, I’ve been taking a greater interest in what skincare products I’m using. These products have found a place in my skincare routine to help keep my skin looking bright and clean. I love that all of these products come at drugstore prices, and I don’t have to spend a fortune to keep my skin healthy.
